Abstract

Georgia after the Rose Revolution: The Rise and Fall of Mikheil Saakashvili.

The article seeks to analyze key domestic and foreign policy issues in post-Soviet Georgia following the inauguration of the current president Mikheil Saakashvili. The authors discuss the confluence of internal and external factors in determining the country’s development in the wake of the Rose Revolution in 2003. Special attention is given to the internal turmoil of 2007 and 2008, when the Saakashvili administration faced a mounting challenge from the opposition in the form of street protests. The military conflict in South Ossetia between Moscow and Tbilisi in August 2008 is also explored. Finally, the authors discuss the fallout of the August war for Georgia in general and the Saakashvili regime in particular.
