Abstract

The Modernization of West German Universities after 1945

 The paper deals with the modernization of the West German universities after 1945. In the first post war years important university reforms did not occur. At the end of the 1950’s some ideas began to appear which were fully realized in the reforms in the 1960’s. New duties were assigned to the universities, weakening the traditional conception of education. Extensive building of new universities, formation of new models of universities, rapid grow of the number of students and changes in the social structure of university students help to understand the 1960’s as an important milestone in modern German university history.
