Abstract

The Writers and their Republic. The Authors of FRG and Their Civil Engagement in 1950s and 1960s.

The article focuses on the modernization of the West German literary milieu in the years from 1945 to 1968/9. The main features of the modernisation are according to Práchenská the change of generations and the political engagement of the most of the writers. The experience with National Socialism and the revolutionary years 1968/9 changed the attitude to social engagement of the post war cultural representatives in West Germany. Many writers tried to realise their ideological requests by social (mainly protest) activities or direct in the political sphere as members of the political party (SPD). However limited was their political capability, they became moral authority which helped to secure the democratic regime of West Germany.
